Description

Sarget de Gruaud Larose is the second wine of Château Gruaud-Larose, a Saint-Julien estate in Bordeaux. The 2022 is a classic left-bank blend, anchored by Cabernet Sauvignon with Petit Verdot adding structure and grip. This is a wine built to age, but it arrives approachable and alive.

The nose opens with black fruit, cherry, and dark florals, layered with herbal and earthy notes, loam, undergrowth, hints of cigar smoke and creosote. On the palate it's medium-bodied but concentrated, with a sappy black fruit core and a mineral-driven finish that feels fresh and clean. The tannins are firm but supple, coating the mouth gently rather than gripping it. There's warmth and toasted depth to the fruit, a salty minerality that cuts through, and an intensity that feels pure and purposeful. The finish is long and unfussy, with a cheerful energy that makes the wine feel immediate even as its structure suggests years ahead.

Lovely aromatics, a touch floral, herbal and darkly fruited. Smells clean, fresh and lively. Gently chewy, succulent and mouthwatering, clearly quite tannic but they softly coat the mouth. You can tell the power underneath, the fruit feels a bit warm and toasted and it's a little strict but I like the intensity, feels strong but so fruity and pure. Forward, open and alive - a lovely salty tang gives the minerality, finishing clean and long. Cheerful. 50% production , 10% press. 3.8pH. Total acidity 3.35g/l. 4% Petit Verdot completes the blend.
