Riserva bottlings from Montalcino are made only from strong vintages and given extra time before release, and this 2019 from the Sassetti family's Pertimali estate follows that tradition. It is Sangiovese grown in the hills of Brunello di Montalcino, a wine built for the long haul and drawn from a small production. Historically the family reserved this label for the years judged most complete, and the 2019 carries that ambition.
The aromatics run savory and layered: sweet tobacco, licorice and incense, roasted coffee and grilled herbs, with a mentholated lift over a core of wild red and black berries. On the palate it is surprisingly juicy and vibrant, red and black fruit propelled by zesty acidity, the tannins upfront but finely textured and giving a chewy grip rather than harshness. There is real youthful tension here, plenty of energy, and a long staining finish marked by sour cherry and a spike of wild citrus. Balanced and already approachable, it is built to unfold slowly over many years.

Sweet tobacco and licorice combine with hints of incense and mentholated blackberries as the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva emerges from the glass. This is surprisingly juicy and vibrant on the palate, with racy red and black fruit propelled by zesty acidity as a wild citrus spike embellishes the close. The 2019 leaves the senses reeling with youthful tension yet maintains fantastic energy, tapering off with staining length and sour cherry. The 2019 is already approachable yet balanced for a long and steady evolution. (Vinous)
Until now, the Sassetti family has only produced a Riserva bottling in years rated five stars by the consorzio. As this evaluation system has been discontinued from the 2000 vintage, the future direction of Pertimali’s Riserva is yet unknown. A heady mix of spice, leather, roasted coffee and grilled herbs rises from the glass. These savoury elements bleed into the wild red berry core, making for a multifaceted mouthful. The tannins are upfront without being aggressive, intricately textured and lend a chewy bite. Racy acidity surges in equal measure, propelling a blood orange explosion for the finale. (MM). Effusive aromas and flavors of mint and eucalyptus join forces with black cherry, black currant, violet, iron and tobacco. There are ample tannins, and overall this red is broad and rangy yet comes together nicely on the lingering, expansive aftertaste. Distinctive and commanding. Best from 2028 through 2045. 600 cases made, 280 cases imported. (BS). (Wine Spectator, June 2025)
