Description
Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast, built its reputation on Cabernet rather than Sangiovese, and Tenuta San Guido's red is the wine most associated with that idea. The 2022 blends Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc into a still red that leans structured rather than soft, a vintage shaped by a hot, dry season and severe fruit selection that cut yields. This is a wine built for the cellar, and a few years of bottle age will help it find its footing.
Aromatically it runs floral and bright, violets over red currant and red berry fruit, with cedar, graphite, sandalwood and a whisper of Mediterranean herbs like thyme and rosemary. There's iron and a saline, chalky undertow beneath the fruit, and the tannins are firm and chewy but polished, holding the wine on a vertical, almost taut line. Plenty of juice waits behind that backbone, and the finish trails off with mint and a sweet grenadine lift, more elegant than its power would suggest. Give it time.

Plenty of red currant, cedar, iron and terra cotta aromas follow through to a medium to full body with graphite, sandalwood, red currants and fresh Mediterranean herbs such as thyme and rosemary. The tannins are chewy but polished in texture. This is a Sassicaia that needs three or four years of bottle age to come together and soften. A structured wine for the cellar. Try after 2029.
Several months on from the first taste in the spring, Sassicaia 2022's aromatics have come to the fore. It's really floral and bright, with dense violet-infused back and red berries supported by fine, chalky tannins. There's some very juicy fruit waiting to be released, with a saline and succulent, creamy and chalky background. ‘1998 was one of the best vintages in Bolgheri...for aromatic content, we can compare it to 2022,’ says general manager and production manager, Carlo Paoli.
The Tenuta San Guido 2022 Bolgheri Sassicaia is very much defined by its strong tannic backbone, and tasting it now, a year after release, that impression remains unchanged. A perfumed, almost floral component lifts the bouquet, which stays elegantly vertical and sharp despite the wine’s power. This is a little tank of a wine, moving forward with muscle and intensity, a character memorably described by Tenuta San Guido general manager Carlo Paoli as “a kid with a drum kit,” an image that feels both fitting and true. The vintage saw lower yields, down 18%, due to severe fruit selection in a hot and dry growing season. The finish brings playful notes of mint and sweet grenadine, trailing off with surprising elegance.
