Tempranillo Peludo is a nearly extinct, hairy-leafed variant of the grape, and it forms the whole of this bottling, grown high in San Vicente de la Sonsierra. The wine comes from Señorio de San Vicente, established in 1991 in the La Canoca site by the Eguren family, and the 2021 is a single-varietal Rioja drawn from a massal selection of those old vines, planted on clay and coarse gravel and carrying the deep acidity that marks fruit well suited to its climate. It ages 20 months in barrel (a mix of French and American oak), and 2021 counts among the more complete vintages here.
Expect a wine that reads distinctly old-world, salty and earthy under rich black and red fruit, with aromatic herbs, undergrowth, oak spice, graphite, and a lifted note of orange peel. The oak folds in early and cleanly, so the aromas feel integrated rather than layered on top. On the palate it manages both power and finesse: intense and broad in flavor, yet fine-boned, with chalky tannins and a beautiful texture through a long, complex finish. It already charms, but it is built to deepen for decades.

Founded in 1991 in La Canoca by the Eguren family of Sierra Cantabria, the 2021 San Vicente is 100% Tempranillo from the highest area of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, the grapes a massal selection of a nearly extinct variety called Tempranillo Peludo. The vines are well-balanced to the region and climate and have profound acidity. Bordeaux barrels age the wine for 20 months. Salty and earthy, it has an old-world quality accented in rich black fruit, sous bois, oak spice, graphite, and dried herb, finishing with a complex finesse that should keep it singing another 20-25 years. (Jeb Dunnuck, July 2025)
The 2021 San Vicente showcases the completeness of the year with a rare combination of power and elegance, with intensity of fruit, clout and very good freshness and the roundness of the tannins from the year. It has a lot of everything; the selection of Tempranillo used for this wine gave a lot of color, notes of aromatic herbs and ripe berry fruit and a solid palate, but it's fine-boned, with a beautiful texture. It's still young but already shows incipient complexity. It absorbed the new oak (French and American) pretty early, and the aromas and flavors are very integrated. It should be very long lived. This is one of the finest vintages for San Vicente. 50,000 bottles. It was bottled in August 2023. (Wine Advocate, February 2025)
The 2021 San Vicente was made from 100% Tempranillo Peludo, a rare variant of the grape. This was grown on clay and coarse gravel in La Canoca, San Vicente de la Sonsierra. Aged for 20 months in mostly French oak, the nose is expressive, with red fruit, balsamic herbs, undergrowth and a light note of orange peel. On the palate, it’s intense and textured, with chalky tannins and a broad stream of flavor. This has immediate charm and long-term aging potential. It is already expressive but will deepen beautifully over time. (Vinous)
