Merlot in Napa Valley can lean toward the massive and extracted, so it's worth noting when a bottling aims instead for ease and finesse. This is the 2022 Lost Vineyard bottling from Snowden Vineyards, a Napa Valley Merlot with a small addition of Grenache (3%) woven in, aged in French oak (about a third of it new). The style is unabashedly approachable rather than monumental.
Expect aromas of black cherry and black tea, with a curious top note of almond paste. It's medium to full-bodied and rounded on the palate, soft and generous, the sort of wine that pours easily and asks nothing of you. Tannins are gentle, barely present, and the finish carries a touch of mocha. Not a powerhouse, but an elegant, unfussy pour that drinks well now.

The bargain-priced 2022 Merlot Lost Vineyard features scents of black tea, black cherries and a hint of almond paste. Aged in 30% new French oak and blended with a splash of Grenache (3%), it's medium to full-bodied, soft, supple, round and generous. It's a fun, easy-drinking wine, with soft tannins barely registering on the mocha-tinged finish. No, it's not a big powerhouse but something rather elegant. (Wine Advocate, February 2025)
