Description

Sauvignon Blanc from South Africa's Walker Bay sits in an interesting middle ground, a cool-climate coastal style that borrows the zip of the New World without leaning too hard on overt varietal flavors. This bottling from Southern Right, in the Western Cape, draws on fruit from cooler inland sites as well as the coast, with the bulk raised in stainless steel and a small portion in used oak to round the edges. The 2025 is a still, dry white built for freshness.

Expect a fragrant, green-edged nose: grapefruit and nettle, a touch of dandelion, hints of green papaya and something faintly earthy underneath. The palate is crisp and linear, more about precision than weight, with a bright streak of acidity carrying it through to a clean, sapid finish that keeps you reaching for the next sip. Elegant and well made, it rewards drinking in its fresh youth.

The 2024 Sauvignon Blanc comes from the clayey Cape Coast, plus granitic soils in Elgin, matured 8% in used oak and the rest in stainless steel. It has a well-defined bouquet with grapefruit, nettle, dandelion and subtle earthy scents. The palate is well balanced, crisp and linear, with fine delineation. Quite an elegant Sauvignon Blanc, it boasts a precise, sapid finish that urges you back for more. This is very well made and very delicious.

The Southern Right 2024 Sauvignon Blanc (a Cape Coast wine) is light and fragrant in a style that is somewhere between the New World and South Africa. Some of the fruit comes from cool-climate Elgin. In fact, fruit is sourced from across 29 different blocks. This is one of the bread-and-butter wines of the estate. There are notes of green papaya and exotic fruit. Texturally, the wine is thin on the mid-palate, with a good kick of acidity to close. The aim is to avoid excessive Sauvignon Blanc flavors but keep its zesty green character.
