Spottswoode Estate's Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon is a Napa Valley blend built on a foundation of Cabernet (79.2%), with supporting roles from Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec. Aged 20 months in French oak, this 2021 is the estate's second label, though it stands confidently on its own merit.
The 2021 vintage reveals itself through layers of savoury spice and fragrant cranberry-cassis fruit, layered with dusty mineral notes, spearmint, and sagebrush. On the palate, bright red-berry fruit enters first, juicy and forward, before a substantial architecture of chalky tannins builds and holds through the finish, resolving with brown baking spices and candied violet notes. The wine feels rich and ample despite its medium body, packing dark-toned fruit, leather, tobacco, and menthol into a long, cool finish. This is a serious, structured wine that rewards patience and shows the compact tannin character that defines the finest Cabernets of the year.

Spottswoode's 20th anniversary blend of its Lynderhurst bottling combines 79.2% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10.6% Merlot, 3.8% Petit Verdot, 3.5% Cabernet Franc, and 2.9% Malbec. Sourced from a number of sites throughout Napa Valley, aged 20 months in 35% new French oak. Though this is considered a second label of the estate, it is a fabulous wine in its own right. In 2021, it captures the powerfully compact tannin structure of the low-yielding vintage, matched by the savoury-spiced aromatics that are so prevalent in the best-made Cabernets of the year. Beautifully fragrant cranberry and cassis intermingle with dusty minerals, spearmint and sagebrush. Medium-bodied on entry, its upfront bright, red-berry fruit is juicy and showy until a wealth of robust chalky tannins overtakes everything and holds firm until resolving several seconds later with a cache of sweet brown baking spices, and candied violets.
The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Lyndenhurst is a huge overachiever. Rich and ample in feel, the 2021 packs a serious punch. Dark-toned fruit, spice, leather, tobacco, menthol and dried herbs fill out the layers and carry through to the succulent finish. The Lyndenhurst is especially fine in 2021. This saw 45-50% new oak.
