Description

Merlot rarely gets top billing in Napa, but in Rutherford it takes on real weight and polish, and this 2019 from St. Supéry makes the case. Grown on the producer's estate vineyard in the district, it leans heavily on Merlot (about three quarters of the blend) with Cabernet Sauvignon and a little Petit Verdot filling in structure and edge. The result is medium to full-bodied, built to reward some time in the cellar rather than a rushed opening.

Expect crushed red and black cherries on the nose, joined by ground spice, garden herbs, and a hint of frankincense. The palate is lush and dense without turning heavy, carrying juicy blueberry and plum fruit over velvety tannins and a thread of gravelly minerality. Barrel spice arrives late, more Christmas cake and gingerbread than raw oak, and the acidity keeps everything in line through a clean, well-measured finish.

James Suckling

Aromas of crushed red and black cherries, ground spice and garden herbs. Full-bodied with velvety tannins. Inky, but not brooding, with subtle intensity and very good length. Nicely balanced. Best after 2024. (James Suckling, September 2022)

The 2019 Merlot Rutherford Estate Vineyard comes all from Rutherford and is medium to full-bodied, and balanced, with juicy blueberry and cherry fruits, a kiss of spice and leafy herbs, nicely integrated acidity, and a clean finish. It’s another impeccably made wine from this team. The blend is 77% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Petit Verdot. I’d be thrilled to drink a bottle. (Jeb Dunnuck, February 2023)

From the estate vineyard in Rutherford, delivering dense blue fruits, spiced plums and frankincense mark the aromatics of this Merlot from the estate property. The palate is lush and dense with dusty black cherries, gravelly minerality, and a melange of barrel spice notes of Christmas cake and baked gingerbread to finish the wine. (Decanter, December 2023)
