Viognier reaches its fullest expression in Condrieu, the small Northern Rhône appellation where the grape is grown alone and coaxed into something aromatic and rich. This 2022 comes from Stéphane Ogier, drawn from two lieux-dits, Veauvignière in the commune of Malleval and La Combe in Saint-Pierre de Boeuf, and made from fully ripe fruit picked earlier than usual. It sits in the medium to full-bodied range, with the balance and lift that keep this variety from tipping into heaviness.
The perfume announces itself first, white peach and apricot, orange blossom and rose, a touch of mint and ripe pear layered over a clear mineral thread. On the palate it is dense and precise, with a fleshy core of fruit that fills the mouth without weighing it down. The finish stretches out long and delicate, closing with a gentle bitterness that gives it shape at the table. Poised now and built to reward some patience.
The earliest harvest ever at Condrieu for Stephane, the 2022 Condrieu La Combe De Malleval offers a gorgeous perfume of white peach, orange blossom, white flowers, and a terrific sense of minerality. Balanced, medium to full-bodied, lively, and elegant, it's an absolutely incredible Viognier that's as good as anything in the vintage. (Jeb Dunnuck, March 2024)
Ogier produced the 2022 Condrieu la Combe de Malleval from fully mature grapes planted in two lieux-dits, Veauvignière in the stunning commune of Malleval and La Combe in Saint-Pierre de Boeuf. This has shown very well today, evoking a flamboyant, vibrant bouquet of white peach, apricots, rose and mint mingled with lovely aromas of ripe pear. Full-bodied, dense and precise, it's enrobing and layered with a rich, fleshy core of fruit and a long, delicate and ethereal finish enhanced by gastronomic bitterness. It's built to age with grace.
