A varietal Merlot done in a serious Tuscan register, bottled as Toscana IGT by Tenuta di Trinoro. The 2022 Palazzi is 100% Merlot grown at cooling elevations of 450 to 600 meters, in soils of clay and sand shot through with rocks. This was a hot vintage, and part of what makes the wine interesting is how it sidesteps the jamminess you might expect, keeping the elegant side of the grape in view even as it fills out to a full 15.5% alcohol, heat that stays tucked away rather than announcing itself.
Expect a molten core of sweet cherry and plum, threaded with mocha, espresso, and spice. The tannins are soft and pliant, the texture rich, and the whole thing carries the easy pleasure that good Merlot promises, with enough structure underneath to give it shape. Floral top notes lift the nose, and a roasted, coffee-like edge lingers on the finish. Approachable now, with the fruit still juicy and forward.
This is a lovely Merlot from a hot vintage that walks a fine line by showing the elegant side of the grape without the excessive ripeness you might expect. The Tenuta di Trinoro 2022 Palazzi delivers a big pleasure factor—in the best Merlot tradition—with a molten combination of sweet cherry and spice. The tannins are soft, and this full-bodied Tuscan red is textured and rich. The high alcohol content measures 15.5%, but that heat is hidden well within. This 1,235-bottle release is born in areas of clay and sand with lots of rocks at a cooling 450 to 600 meters in elevation. (Wine Advocate, February 2025)
The 2022 Palazzi, 100% Merlot, is laced with black cherry, plum, mocha and espresso. Soft, pliant and alluring, the 2022 will drink very nicely on release, even if there is a good bit of supporting structure to complement a core of juicy Merlot fruit. Pretty floral top notes and a kick of torrefaction linger on the close. (Vinous)
