Merlot rarely gets to play this role in Tuscany, standing entirely on its own rather than filling out a blend. This is Palazzi, a 100% Merlot bottling from Tenuta di Trinoro in the hills around Sarteano, drawn from high-elevation, remote parcels and released under the Toscana IGT designation. The 2023 is a comparatively approachable vintage of the wine, produced in tiny quantities, and it makes a case for the grape as something both powerful and poised.
There is real volume here, rich and savory, with deep layers of texture, yet it carries that breadth with a surprising grace across the palate. Expect dark-toned
The Tenuta di Trinoro 2023 Palazzi, a 100% Merlot, shows a pronounced rich and savory side backed by solid structure and deep layers of texture. The wine drives volume with grace, moving across the palate with surprising poise and elegance despite its breadth. Sourced from the estate’s high-elevation remote Sarteano vineyards, Merlot is expressed here with notes of baking spice, blackberry and sweet blackcurrant. Produced in just 2,821 bottles plus larger formats, Palazzi remains a powerful yet refined interpretation of the variety. (Wine Advocate, February 2026)
The 2023 Palazzi, 100% Merlot from hillside parcels, is soft and racy right out of the gate. Succulent, dark-toned fruit, chocolate, new leather, licorice and espresso are front and center. The 2023 is a relatively approachable vintage of the Palazzi. As such, it will be ready to drink with minimal cellaring. (Vinous, April 2026)
