Description

Bordeaux grapes have long found a home in southern Tuscany, and this Toscana IGT gathers them under the Tenuta di Trinoro estate: a 2022 blend led by Merlot (around 57 percent), filled out with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and a splash of Petit Verdot. Made originally by the late Andrea Franchetti, Le Cupole spends about eight months in barriques and then a further year or so in concrete before bottling, a regime that keeps the fruit fresh while letting the structure settle.

The color is a youthful magenta-ruby, and the nose leans ripe and floral, with preserved strawberry and baked cherry giving way to blackcurrant, vanilla, and crushed sage. On the palate it is dense and full-bodied, its thick core of dark fruit framed by toasted spice, thyme, and a whiff of charcoal. Tannins are plush and plentiful, the acidity ripe but lively enough to keep everything in balance. There is immediate, sun-warmed pleasure here, and enough structure to reward those who hold it.

An intense and concentrated blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, this is one of the best-value fine wines in Tuscany. The first wine made at Trinoro by the late Andrea Franchetti continues to deliver the goods. Rich, dense and yet impressively balanced, this is dense and ageworthy with creamy yet fresh blackcurrant fruit, fresh thyme, charcoal and toast, and bags of ripe tannins on the palate. (Decanter, October 2025)

A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, the Tenuta di Trinoro 2022 Le Cupole remains one of Italy's greatest value buys, especially for fans of concentrated, sun-drenched Tuscan reds. The fruit is ripe, but not overripe, and there are thick layers of blackcurrant and Morello cherry at the core. These are framed by toasted spice and cinnamon. The wine is medium to full-bodied, although the ample fruit weight gives this vintage a bigger overall mouthfeel. (Wine Advocate, July 2024)

Displaying a youthful magenta/ruby color, the 2022 Le Cupole is a blend of 57% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Franc, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the remainder Petit Verdot. It was aged for eight months in barriques, followed by an additional 12 months in concrete tanks before bottling. In the glass, it reveals a ripe floral perfume of preserved strawberries, baked cherries, vanilla, crushed flowers, and sage. Full-bodied, it offers plush tannins, ripe acidity, and a savory finish. It's approachable and provides a lot of immediate pleasure, yet it should also easily drink well for another decade. Drink 2025-2037. (Jeb Dunnuck, September 2025)
