Description

A Bordeaux-variety blend grown at elevation in southern Tuscany, this 2022 from Tenuta di Trinoro is bottled as Toscana IGT and leans on the estate's four red grapes: Merlot and Cabernet Franc in equal measure at the core, with smaller shares of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. It marks the first vintage since 2015 to include all four together. Low yields off hillside vineyards concentrate the fruit, and at 15% alcohol the wine carries real weight, with the firm tannins that mark the vintage giving it an etched, structured frame.

Opulent and heady, it stains the palate with inky dark fruit, then layers on new leather, incense, licorice, espresso, bittersweet chocolate and clove. The mid-palate is ample and unctuous, flamboyant in its concentration but held in line by that firm tannic spine. The tannins are soft enough to approach young, though a few years in bottle will let some of the baby fat melt away and bring the structure into focus. This is a wine built to age.

The 2022 Tenuta di Trinoro is a heady, opulent wine. Inky dark fruit, new leather, incense, licorice, espresso, bittersweet chocolate and cloves all stain the palate. Unctuous and flamboyant to the core, the 2022 is a total stunner. It can be enjoyed young, as the tannins are rather soft, but I would prefer to give it a few years in bottle to allow some of the baby fat to melt away. This is the first vintage since 2015 that includes all four red varieties on the estate: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. (Vinous)

Wine Advocate

The 2022 Tenuta di Trinoro is a masterful blend of 44% Merlot, 44% Cabernet Franc, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot that delivers imposing structure and the firm tannins that are a defining trait of this vintage. The wine shows a decisively etched profile, and while additional bottle age will help integrate the tannins, that firmness is likely to remain an enduring signature of the season. Planted on high-elevation hillside vineyards in southern Tuscany, the estate’s low-yield philosophy amplifies concentration and intensity. Packed tightly with black fruit richness, the wine offers sustained volume and layered texture, with 15% alcohol powering the very ample mid-palate. Produced in just 8,483 bottles, this is a commanding and age-worthy release. (Wine Advocate, February 2026)
