Description

Barbera is Piedmont's grape, but it has found a comfortable second home in California's Sierra Foothills, where warm days and cool nights suit its natural brightness. This one comes from Shake Ridge Ranch in the Amador County AVA, a 2023 bottling from Terah Bajjalieh, a California native who trained in Spain and France before returning home to make small-lot, low-intervention wines sourced from vineyards around the state.

The style here is light and energetic rather than heavy, with a lift of black pepper on the nose and real aromatic intensity for a wine of this weight. The texture is soft and the tannins fully resolved, which lets the fruit stretch out: think blueberry, threaded with a cool, slatey mineral edge that carries through the finish. Approachable now, with enough structure to keep developing in the bottle over the next several years.

The 2023 Barbera Shake Ridge Ranch is light, bright, and black peppery, with plenty of energy and aromatic intensity. Softly textured, the tannins are well-resolved and evolved, adding to the wine’s length of light-bodied blueberry flavor and slatey minerality. This should continue to develop nicely in the bottle. Drink now through 2030. Native Californian Terah Bajjalieh trained in Spain and France before coming home to make small-lot, low-intervention wines from across the state.
