Lagrein is a red native to the Alto Adige, and in the Gries district near Bolzano it takes on real depth and structure. This Riserva bottling from Terlano is a 2022, aged to the fuller, more serious end of what the grape can do: dark-fruited, firmly built, and unmistakably rooted in this northern Italian corner where mountain air and Mediterranean warmth meet.
Give it a little time in the glass and an early note of spicy oak gives way to black cherry laced with balsamic, rosemary, and cedar. There is dark chocolate here too, along with coffee, black pepper, and a savory hint of sweet spice. The texture is velvety and supple, the ripe red and blue fruit carried on bright, refreshing acidity. Tannins are ripe but edgy, and the finish turns pleasantly bitter, with licorice and a warming glow. Dense yet eminently drinkable.

A whiff of spicy oak slowly blows off to reveal depths of balsamic-laced black cherry, rosemary and cedar shavings as the 2022 Lagrein Riserva Gries opens in the glass. It is elegant and supple with velvety textures and ripe red and blue fruits that ride a tantalizing wave of vibrant acidity. Edgy tannins persist, offset by hints of sour citrus as the 2022 leaves a pleasantly bitter tinge of licorice on the finish. (Vinous, December 2025)
Dark chocolate, coffee powder, black pepper and dark fruit such as black plums and blackcurrants. Medium-bodied with refreshing acidity, this shines with density and drinkability. Showing sweet spices and curry notes with ripe tannins and a quite warming finish. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
