Description
Lagrein is a dark-skinned grape native to Alto Adige, capable of real density and a slightly rustic edge, and this Riserva bottling from Cantina Terlano gives it room to stretch. The 2020 comes from the Sudtirol in Italy's mountainous north, aged into a structured, medium- to full-bodied red that carries the varietal's weight without losing composure.
Expect ripe bramble and wild berry aromas layered with crushed violets, dried orange peel, licorice and a savory whiff of smoke and cigar-box spice, with a hint of toasted walnut and coconut around the edges. On the palate a core of black and blue fruit compote spreads wide and coats the mouth, its tannins so fine and integrated they let the fruit bloom through the middle. Fresh acidity keeps everything in balance, and the finish turns supple and light on its feet. A natural match for raclette or fondue, and equally happy to be opened now or held.

Attractive aromas of ripe bramble berries and wild berries with some toasted walnuts and smoked spices, dried orange peel and crushed violets. Medium- to full-bodied, structured and lengthy yet very fine and even across the palate. Tannins are so transparent and integrated with pure fruit blooming on the mid-palate. A little bit fluid at the end. Delicious as always. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
This wine is an expressive and great example of Lagrein. The wine opens with aromas of macerated black plums, wildflowers, licorice and black pepper. Savory spices wrap around a core of black- and blue-hued fruit compote on the palate; the wine coats the entire mouth. Showing the rustic character of the grape and its rich density, the Cantina Terlano 2020 Alto Adige Lagrein Riserva Porphyr is set for après-ski dinners of cheese raclette or fondue.
