Description
Lagrein is a red native to the far north of Italy, and this Riserva bottling from Terlano shows the grape in its more serious guise. Grown in Alto Adige (Sudtirol), where German and Italian traditions meet, the Porphyr comes from the 2021 vintage and carries the structure and cellar-worthiness the Riserva designation implies. It leans full and firm rather than easygoing.
Dark berries lead the way, cherry and plum deepening toward chocolate and a faint savory edge of cured meat, with sage, white pepper and clove threading through. The entry is silky, then the wine tightens, tart wild-berry fruit gathering tension as grippy, finely textured tannins take hold. A mineral streak runs beneath it all, something like crushed stone and seashell, and the finish is long and structured, closing on a note of bitter licorice. It keeps growing in the glass.

Vivid and attractive on the nose, with dark berries, chocolate and hints of cured meat and sweet spices. Tense and juicy with lot of layers, a medium to full body and fine, textured tannins. I like the mineral aspect, with notes of seashells and crushed stones at the end. Firm and long. It grows on the finish. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
Depths of cherry and plum sauce combine with sage, white pepper and clove as the 2021 Porphyr Lagrein Riserva smolders up from the glass. Silky upon entry, this quickly increases in tension as tart wild berry fruits saturate and grippy tannins collect toward the close. This finishes with dramatic length yet hulking structure.
