Description

Sauvignon Blanc grown in the cool, alpine reaches of Alto Adige tends toward tension rather than tropical exuberance, and this bottling from Terlano leans hard into that mineral register. Quarz comes from a handful of plots where the soil carries a high quartz content, and the wine is fermented in a mix of large wooden barrels and stainless steel before resting nine months on its fine lees. The result is a 2023 Terlaner DOC white that reads as ripe and broad yet restrained, with alcohol and acidity kept firmly in frame.

Expect a lifted, refined nose of crushed lime, young kiwi, and gooseberry, threaded through with sage, mint, and a whiff of flint. The palate is medium-bodied and vibrant, zesty but carrying just enough weight to feel complete, with a stony core that gives the sensation of drinking liquid rock. Cooling acidity drives the citrus and orchard fruit forward, a touch of inner sweetness balanced by a saline, faintly sour twang on a long, polished finish. Fine to open now, with the structure to reward patience.

James Suckling

Restrained and mineral, this is focused on sage and gooseberries with lemon-pulp aromas and flavors. The medium-bodied palate is vibrant and zesty yet balanced by just enough weight. Polished finish. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)

Decanter

From a few selected plots where the soil has a high quartz content, Quarz is fermented in a combination of large wooden barrels and stainless steel, and spends a further nine months on the fine lees. Full, broad and ripe yet showing restraint too with just a light breath of thiols, this is juicy and super-intense. The balance is there though, and the alcohol and acidity sit well within the frame. Very well modulated and surprisingly drinkable, this should also age very well. (Decanter, March 2025)

Vinous

The 2023 Sauvignon Quarz is remarkably lifted and refined in this vintage, as crushed limes, young kiwis and mint are complicated by a whiff of flint. This is a model of purity, like drinking liquid rocks, with a stern mineral core and cooling acidity that propels its citrus-spiked orchard fruits. A pretty inner sweetness lingers, offset by a sour twang as hints of green melon fade, leaving a salty tinge and the palate salivating for more. This is a riveting expression of Quarz. (Vinous, December 2025)
