Cool-climate Chardonnay finds a natural home in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and this single-vineyard bottling from Thomas Fogarty, drawn from the Mindego Ridge site, leans into that terrain. The 2021 is a California Chardonnay built more on tension than opulence, showing the sort of structure that comes to the fore as the wine opens in the glass.
It can be reserved at first, then unwinds into citrus oil, nectarine, and a touch of pastry cream, with floral notes lifting the aromatics. The palate sits on the leaner side of medium-bodied, orchard fruit set against bright, fresh acidity that keeps everything taut. Give it air and it grows more complete, finishing clean and nicely composed.

The 2021 Chardonnay Mindego Ridge Vineyard is fabulous. It offers a super-intriguing mix of citrus fruit, floral character and bright acids, along with notable structure that starts to emerge with aeration. Complete and beguiling, the Mindego Ridge Chardonnay is superb. (Vinous, November 2023)
Introverted and timid at the outset, the 2021 Chardonnay Mindego Ridge Vineyard leads with aromas of citrus oil, nectarine and pastry cream after time in the glass. The palate is on the slender side of medium-bodied, balancing orchard fruit flavors with fresh acidity and a straightforward finish with decent length. It's a delightful wine but lacks the tensile intensity of the stellar estate Fogarty lineup. (Wine Advocate, April 2024)
