Pinot Noir is a grape that rewards patience and site, and this bottling from Thomas Fogarty draws on the Mindego Ridge Vineyard in California. The 2017 is a single-vineyard expression, medium-bodied and built more on structure and freshness than on weight, the kind of Pinot that asks for a little air before it shows its hand.
Pale to medium ruby in the glass, it opens slowly to red and black cherry, bay leaf, dried flowers, and a savory herbal note, with a touch of loam underneath. Give it time and it fills out across the palate, gaining intensity as it goes, framed by fine-grained tannins and a juicy, mouthwatering acidity. There is a chalky, minty brightness to it, tightly coiled and focused in its youth, finishing long and spicy.

Pale to medium ruby in color, the 2017 Pinot Noir Mindego Ridge Vineyard very slowly blossoms to aromas of red and black cherries, bay leaf, loam, dried flowers and hints of bouquet garni. The palate is medium-bodied and intense, gaining in amplitude as it swirls in the mouth. It has a firm, fine-grained frame and addicting juicy freshness, finishing long and spicy. The 2017 Pinot Noir Mindego Ridge Vineyard is bright and nicely focused, but also tightly wound today. Chalk, mint and floral notes add striking brightness to this vibrant, somewhat nervous Pinot. It will be interesting to see if the 2017 gains more weight in bottle. Today, it is a bit compact, which is unusual given that most wines from this site so far have been more exuberant.
