Description

High in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Pinot Noir takes on a cooler, more savory cast than its counterparts farther south, and this estate-grown bottling from Thomas Fogarty leans into that character. The 2017 Windy Hill Vineyard is a California Pinot in the lighter, more transparent mold, pale to medium ruby in the glass, built more for finesse than power.

Aromas run to dried black cherry and crushed blueberry, edged with loamy earth, Earl Grey tea leaves, peppercorn, laurel and a lift of dried herbs and floral perfume. The palate is light to medium in weight, soft and inviting, with a firm, faintly chalky texture that gives the red fruit shape and a long, juicy close. There is real textural nuance here, wild flowers, mint and a whisper of lavender woven through, and while the finish turns a touch slender, the overall impression is pretty and immediately approachable, needing little time to come around.

Vinous

The 2017 Pinot Noir Windy Hill Vineyard Estate Grown is soft and inviting, with lovely textural depth and nuance. Sweet red/purplish berry fruit, wild flowers, mint, licorice and lavender are all finely-knit in a floral inviting Pinot that will drink well with minimal cellaring. The 2017 turns just a bit slender on the finish, but it is nevertheless very pretty. (Vinous, October 2019)
