Description

The Santa Cruz Mountains sit high above the fog line, and Pinot Noir grown there tends toward perfume and tension rather than weight. This is the Rapley Trail Vineyard bottling from Thomas Fogarty, a single-vineyard California Pinot Noir from the 2017 vintage, medium-bodied and built more for lift than for power.

Pale ruby in the glass, with an aromatic pull that runs from violet and dried lavender to tangerine, blueberry, sliced strawberry, and crushed raspberry, all carried on a dusty, saline, earthy undercurrent. The palate is silky and layered, its perfumed flavors framed by firm, fine-grained tannins. There is a taut, nervous energy here, plenty of freshness and vibrancy lifting a long, spicy finish, with just enough mid-palate depth to hold the whole thing in balance.

Pale to medium ruby, the 2017 Pinot Noir Rapley Trail Vineyard has a siren's call nose of violet and dried lavender, tangerine, blueberries, sliced strawberries, crushed raspberries and saline with a dusty, earthy undercurrent. The palate is medium-bodied with intense, perfumed flavor layers. It has a frame of firm, fine-grained tannins and great freshness to lift the long, spicy finish. (Wine Advocate, February 2020)

The 2017 Pinot Noir Rapley Trail Vineyard is silky and beautifully perfumed, with just enough mid-palate depth to keep things in balance. There is plenty of vibrancy and energy, in the somewhat nervous, taut style that is typical of the Fogarty Pinots in 2017. (Vinous, October 2019)
