High in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Pinot Noir takes on a firmer, more structured cast than the variety shows in warmer California pockets, and this bottling from Thomas Fogarty, drawn from its Rapley Trail site, leans fully into that cooler, mountain-grown intensity. It is a 2019 red built for patience rather than instant charm.
Right now this is a dense, inward wine that holds its cards close. A solid core of red fruit sits inside a heavy wrap of tannin, with mineral and savory notes that start to surface once it has time in the glass. Medium in body but far from mild, it carries a coiled, muscular intensity that is hard to miss. Give it cellar time to unwind, because today it plays hard to get.

The 2019 Pinot Noir Rapley Vineyard is a dense, inward wine. Swaths of tannin wrap around a solid core of red fruit, with mineral and savory accents that begin to emerge with air. The 2019 needs cellaring to soften, as it is pretty forbidding today. Although medium in body, the Rapley has a virile intensity to it that is impossible to miss. (Vinous, May 2022)
