Tuscany's Bordeaux-inspired reds trade Sangiovese for the international grapes, and this 2010 from Tolaini is very much in that mold: a Toscana Rosso IGT built on Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot, drawn from the Tenuta Montebello estate. Dense and concentrated, it carries the structure to reward patient cellaring, and comes presented in a wood case.
Dark and brooding in the glass, with black cherry and blackberry leading and tobacco, spice, leather, and bitter dark chocolate filling in behind. Savory Mediterranean herbs, lavender, and a graphite edge lend aromatic complexity, while the palate stays rich and chewy without losing its finesse. The tannins were already knitting together nicely, so the silkiness this bottle shows now only deepens with time.
A compelling blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, the 2010 Picconero Tenuta Montebello packs a powerful punch in terms of density and concentration. This expression is rich and chewy with dark cherry and blackberry as protagonist. Solid supporting roles are played by tobacco, spice and bitter dark chocolate. The 2010 vintage shows a superior sense of finesse and silkiness in the mouth. Picconero can be put aside for long cellar aging. (Wine Advocate, October 2014)
The 2010 Picconero is a dark, brooding beauty. Savory herbs, tobacco, leather, smoke, black cherries and dark spices inform a powerful virile wine endowed with tons of depth. Mediterranean herbs, lavender and graphite develop in the glass, adding considerable aromatic complexity. The tannins are already pretty nicely integrated for the year, which means the 2010 won't need more than another year or two to be fully expressive. (Vinous, September 2014)
