In the hills of northern Piedmont, Nebbiolo takes on a slightly different accent than it does in Barolo or Barbaresco, and the Gattinara zone is where Travaglini works this grape into a wine built for structure and length. The 2022 is a still red made from Nebbiolo, a variety known for its firm tannins, high acidity, and aromatics that lean toward red cherry, dried rose, and tar, all framed by the cooler, more alpine character of this corner of the region.
Presented in its uniquely curvaceous bottle, the Travaglini 2022 Gattinara opens to a beautiful bouquet of rose petal, lilac and wild cherry that immediately sets an elegant and finely nuanced tone. Fermented in stainless steel and aged for 30 months in oak, followed by three months in bottle, the wine caresses the senses with the grace of Nebbiolo married to the precision and mineral definition that come from Gattinara's ancient volcanic soils. There is lovely harmony throughout, making this historic label a timeless benchmark for northern Italian Nebbiolo. This is an impressive achievement with a production as large as 130,000 bottles. Travaglini's 2022 Gattinara is such a classy, polished wine. Sweet macerated cherry, pine, blood orange, spice and new leather are all lifted in the glass. Silky tannins wrap it all up in style. This is a very sexy wine from Travaglini. All the elements are so well balanced. What a total delight. (Vinous, February 2026)
