In Toro, the local strain of Tempranillo goes by Tinta de Toro, and it tends toward power: deep color, dark fruit, real structure. This bottling comes from Finca los Quemados, a plot of old, ungrafted vines planted in 1900 on their original rootstock, the kind of material that has pushed this once-rustic corner of Castilla y León into serious company. The 2021 spent 20 months in barrel and a further year in bottle before release, a full-bodied red built to reward patience.
Expect violets and lavender alongside fresh plum and raspberry, with dark berry fruit, black licorice, and a lift of cedar and baking spice underneath. The palate is broad, creamy, and concentrated, its volume carried by finely textured tannins that offer gentle grip rather than force. That grip lends tension and keeps the richness in check, and the finish runs long, with depth and nuance to spare. A balanced, elegant wine with the structure to develop further over the coming years.

The 2021 Vatan is from a region of rustic wineries that has since come into its own due to the tremendous potential of the old, ungrafted vineyards, like Finca los Quemados, the source here, planted in 1900 on original rootstock. This full-bodied wine is concentrated in dark berry fruit, black licorice, and a lightness of baking spice and cedar, the sultry layers surrounded by sweet, velvety tannins. The structure for additional aging is there even after 20 months in barrel and a year in bottle; enjoy best 2029-2036. (Jeb Dunnuck, July 2025)
