Description

Vieux Château Certan's 2019 Pomerol is a Bordeaux blend from one of the region's most respected producers. The wine captures the elegance and depth the Right Bank estate is known for, built on Merlot with a supporting role for Cabernet Sauvignon.

The bouquet unfolds with cassis and cherry, violet, loamy minerality, sweet spices and incense. On the palate, it's full-bodied and seamless, with a fleshy core of vibrant fruit held together by lively acidity and ripe, powdery tannins. The structure is precise and fine-grained, with impressive complexity that ranges from black fruit and sous-bois to truffle and hints of dried citrus peel. A long, resonant finish confirms the wine's balance and depth. This is a wine built to age, though its vibrancy and sensual character make it approachable now.

One of the wines of the vintage, the 2019 Vieux Château Certan unfurls in the glass with a striking bouquet of cassis and cherries mingled with notions of violets, loamy soil, sweet spices and incense. Full-bodied, ample and layered, it's seamless and enveloping, with a fleshy core of beautifully vibrant fruit, lively acids and ripe, powdery tannins. Concluding with a long, resonant finish, this perfumed, sensual Vieux Château Certan is a remarkable achievement from Alexandre and Guillaume Thienpont.

The 2019 Vieux-Château-Certan has a fabulous bouquet with stunning delineation, a complex array of red and black fruit, sous-bois , truffle and Seville orange marmalade. The palate is medium-bodied and very precise, with fine-grain tannins, a superb bead of acidity and a peacock's tail on the finish lingering long in the mouth. I knew this was an awesome Pomerol...but maybe not this awesome! Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

This is glorious. Damsons and sloes, black and red cherries, violets, dried petals and saffron, cumin and curry leaf too – and then cedar and graphite from the Cabernet. Cool and fresh, lifted with cashmere tannins and a plunge-pool depth and elegance. Wonderfully harmonious, it flows across the palate in the most luxuriant way. The latest in a succession of great wines from VCC and probably the best of them all.
