Description
Old vines do something a young vineyard cannot, and this Rioja Tinto leans hard into that advantage. It comes from three parcels within the Villota vineyard, planted from 1960 onward, where the average vine now runs to about 77 years. The blend is 95% Tempranillo with 5% Graciano, drawn from low-yielding plots on limestone soils, then aged 22 months in new French oak. This is the 2021 vintage, and it reads as a serious, concentrated expression of the estate.
The color is nearly black, and the palate matches that density: full-bodied and muscular, with tannins that are firm and active but polished to a silky texture. Expect dark cherry and sour cherry fruit layered with toasty oak spice, juniper, Mediterranean herbs, and a salty balsamic edge. Acidity keeps the whole thing driven and vibrant rather than heavy. It is intense and youthful now, built to reward patience, so give it a few years of cellar time before pulling the cork.

The 2021 Las Anchas is from a great vintage and three spectacular plots, Las Anchas, Lentisco, and Central, with an average plant age of 77 years and 5% Graciano. With a lot of limestone in the soil and low yields, this shows the depth of concentration of old vines, nearly black in color, with silky smooth, supple tannins. It spent a longer time aging in new French oak barrel, 22 months. Newly released, it imparts layers of oak spice, dark cherry, and salty balsamic and is structured, powerfully full-bodied, and capable of aging 30-40 years. A new cuvée from Villota comprising 95% Tempranillo and 5% Graciano from parcels of old vines with an average age of 77 years. Aromas of high-quality toasty, balsamic oak linger above red berry fruit, juniper and Mediterranean herbs.
