Description

A single-site Rioja Gran Reserva drawn from a small parcel of high-density, trellised vines, this is Tempranillo from Viñedos de Páganos and the hand of Marcos Eguren. The 2014 came from a difficult growing season, with rain in the final stretch before harvest, and the winemaking leaned toward patience: a careful selection of fruit, extended aging, and 28 months in new French oak Bordeaux barrels before it was bottled in early 2017. The result reads as a cooler, more transparent expression of the vintage rather than a heavy one.

Expect brightness first, red fruit in the register of strawberry, raspberry, wild cherry, and fresh plum, laced with dried herb, thyme, and a savory olive edge that comes from the oak. Time in bottle has begun to layer in tertiary complex

Yet another remarkable wine from Marcos Eguren, the 2014 El Puntido Gran Reserva is from a small portion of El Puntido planted to high-density trellised vines. There’s a pure expression of the site from the special selection of grapes that led to long aging before barrel fermentation and 28 months of aging in new French oak Bordeaux barrels. The wine was bottled in March 2017. The vintage was difficult because of rain falling 10 days before harvest, but the result here is a bright wine of considerable acidity that tastes fresh and alive in lovely strawberry, raspberry, and dried herb, with understated, full-bodied weight and breadth. Drinking beautifully now, it shows the ability to shine another 10-15 years. (Jeb Dunnuck, November 2025)

The 2014 Gran Reserva El Puntido was aged for 28 months in new Bordeaux barrels of French oak and shows developing tertiary complexity. Aromas move from herbs and vine blossom to wild cherry and fresh plum, with subtle aging notes, olive tones and thyme from the oak. With more time in bottle, integration deepens, while lively acidity and fine tannins shape a silky, agile palate. Transparent and nuanced, it already suggests the cooler character of the vintage.
