A modern take on the reserva category from Rioja Alta, made in Labastida by Viñedos Sierra Cantabria. The 2021 leans heavily on Tempranillo, 97 percent of the blend, with a small share of Graciano rounding it out. This is a style built to show fruit rather than the drying, oak-driven austerity some associate with the region's older bottlings.
The nose runs dark, blackberry and plum with a faint balsamic edge and a whisper of chalk. On the palate the primary fruit comes forward first, carried by a juicy, energetic core and a lightly chalky structure underneath. Fruit does the driving here, and the wine is all the more approachable for it.

From Labastida, the 2021 Reserva Única blends 97% Tempranillo with 3% Graciano. Dark-toned on the nose, it offers blackberry and plum alongside a subtle balsamic hint and a touch of chalk. On the palate, primary fruit takes the lead, backed by juicy energy and a lightly chalky structure. Overall, this is a modern-style reserva driven largely by fruit. (Vinous, April 2026)
