Walter Hansel's 2022 Pinot Noir The Estate comes from a careful selection of fruit across the Russian River Valley ranch, using only the Rochioli clone. The wine was fully de-stemmed and aged in a mix of new and one-year-old French oak, a restrained approach that lets the varietal speak clearly.
Ruby in the glass, it's ripe and immediately charming, showing classic cola and baked cherry alongside notes of clove and toasted cedar. The palate has real freshness despite the wine's richness, with a light gamey undertone that adds complexity. Ripe concentration of fruit carries all the way through the finish with a supple, approachable mouthfeel. This is a wine ready to enjoy now but has enough structure and concentration to develop nicely over the next few years.

Moving to the reds, the 2022 Pinot Noir The Estate Vineyard comes from a selection from the entire ranch focusing only on the Rochioli clone. It was entirely de-stemmed (as are all these Pinot Noirs) and saw 25% new French oak, with the rest in one-year-old François Frères barrels. In the glass, it pours a ruby color, and it’s ripe and charming, with classic notes of cola, baked cherries, clove, and toasted cedar. It offers good freshness on the palate and has a light gamey note, but it has good, ripe concentration of fruit that’s persistent through the finish, with a supple mouthfeel and a ripe sensibility. Drink 2024-2028. 631 cases were produced. (Jeb Dunnuck, June 2024)
