The wine spent 17 months in French oak, 85 percent of it new, which shapes a full-bodied red built more for plushness than for muscle. Still, and worth giving a little air.
The oak leaves its mark in soft layers of cedar and vanilla, with a touch of toasted coconut, while the fruit underneath runs toward cherry and cranberry rather than dense black jam. Ripe black cherry and blackberry show up too, cushioned on smooth tannins, and there are accents of toast, baking spice, blueberry, dark plum, spearmint, and chocolate.
